In my August 12 post I published a few pictures of my new (err: New to Me, anyway … for they are Oldies!) Magnepan SMGa loudspeakers. Magnepans are really something else! They are Dipole Flat Panels (dimensions are h=122cm x w=48cm x d=2cm), using Planar-Magnetic Driver Technology. See the Magnepan website on the Magneplanar Technology.
We Europeans are somewhat discriminated: all Magnepan models are sold in Europe for about twice the US price and (worse) the ‘MMG, 60 day, money back guarantee program‘ doesn’t count here (as far as I know).
Or does it? They state: Now available in Europe! … . An email address is not provided, though. Very uncommon.
But hey, I stick to second-hand gear anyway … .
Click the image for a 1986 Magnepan Color Brochure (pdf). Here you’ll find the SMGa specifications (for what it’s worth). This 1986 model is, of course, discontinued.
And how does it sound?
This is where the header image comes in!
(The water spring from the Sant Jaume de Llierca mountain.)
It tastes like fresh mountain water: clear, soft and subtle.
As said: the SMGa’s are very old and, for Magneplanar panels, relatively small.
We have a sort of Dutch eBay (Marktplaats) where at this moment the following models are offered: MGIIIA, MG1 Improved, MG-II and MG-Ic.
It is tempting … but I’ll stick to the small ones for now: all them biggies do need bigger amps and … I always want 2 identical pairs for my Denon AV monster to feed and … I should by then really move the whole bloody mess to another dedicated (bigger) room. Yes, that is silly.
